There are two forms of copyright associated with a sound recording that you’ll want to pay close attention to when you upload a product. You will input this information in the ‘Release Information’ and ‘Track Information’ sections on the AWAL Uploader page each time you submit a release for delivery.
Note: The P & C lines are also the information displayed below your releases on Spotify.
The first form of copyright is the ‘P’ (phonograph) line which will denote the copyright of the sound recording you’re uploading. The legal owner of the sound recording should be listed here whether that be a label, an artist, or another entity, as well as the year the title was first released.
P lines are present at both the Release and Track level of a product, so please be sure to enter appropriate information at both levels. In some instances, your track level P line could be different than your release level P line. For example, if you released a track as a single in 2019, but that same track is appearing on an EP being released in 2020 your P&C lines would likely read as follows:
- Track Level: 2019
- Release level: 2020
The second form of copyright attached to a sound recording is the ‘C’ line. The ‘C’ line will denote the copyright of the artwork, packshot, packaging, text, and/or other printed material associated with a recording. The legal owner of the printed material related to your product should be credited here, alongside the year in which the product was first released with that particular artwork/liner notes/packaging printed material.
Note: If you’re uploading a remastered track or product, please find instructions for P&C years here.
We encourage you to check that your P & C lines are filled out correctly at both the release level and track level. If this information is entered incorrectly, your release will be returned to your AWAL Portal for you to correct it.
In many cases, the P & C lines should both be the same as the Original Release Date of your product, however, this isn’t always the case. If you’re ever unsure of how your P & C lines should be filled out, please consult with your entertainment lawyer for advice.
To change the P & C lines on your release after it’s been delivered, please get in touch via the Contact Us page in your Portal.
